| Over the years the Walla Walla hotel hosted many luminaries including Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson. But from the'70s through the '90s, it slowly fell into disrepair. The hotel was headed for demolition when its rescuer appeared: Kyle Mussman, a self-made millionaire and the founder of Cellular One (now owned by Verizon). Years earlier, Kyle had discovered the spirit of the people and the resplendent beauty of the Walla Walla Valley. "It was a place I wanted to be part of—a place where I could raise my children," he recalls.
Kyle also recognized the MarcusWhitman as a landmark worth saving and purchased the hotel in 1999. After renovations and remodeling, the historic structure reopened in 2001. As president and CEO, Kyle's goal was to preserve the hotel's heritage while creating a state-of-the-art facility that would accommodate the needs of today's global business environment. The hotel offers 10,000 square feet of conference space, a business center, a fitness center, and free Wi-Fi access in all public areas.
