A family tradition for impeccable quality and consistency is being celebrated this year as Heitz Wine Cellars observes its 50th anniversary.
When Joe and Alice Heitz planted their roots in the Napa Valley back in 1961, they couldn’t possibly have imagined the impact their wines would have on the region, the state, the nation, and even the world. Through all the glory, Heitz Wine Cellars has remained a family-run company. Today Heitz wines are available for purchase in all 50 states and 22 foreign countries.

For over 30 years, the second generation has been instrumental in the winery’s success. President Kathleen Heitz Myers and winemaker David Heitz have skillfully balanced the family’s core values with innovative winemaking and farming practices, making their own dynamic mark on the family business.
They are perhaps most proud of the fact that Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet, introduced by the Heitz and May families in 1966, was the first vineyard-designated wine in the Napa Valley, a Cabernet Sauvignon that continues to be one of the most revered wines in the world today. Heitz Cellars was also one of the first to export its wines, thus introducing countless wine lovers to a place they had never experienced before: the Napa Valley.
The Heitz family has gradually expanded their farmland to encompass 400 acres located in the Napa Valley’s finest winemaking appellations. They believe their historic role in American winemaking carries with it the responsibility to preserve this rich agricultural heritage. Their decision to farm all of their vineyards sustainably and organically has resulted in healthier vines and has allowed the true characteristics of each site to prevail in the complexities of the wines.
Heitz sales and tasting room remains in its original location on St. Helena Highway. For those who have not visited recently, a new building composed of native stone and mahogany serves as a wonderful reminder that Heitz Wine Cellars celebrates the old while embracing the new.
