T&T's Winery Guide: Powers Winery

Under the leadership of Greg Powers, a second-generation winemaker, Powers Winery has earned a glowing reputation for its premium wines crafted from the state of  Washington’s finest grapes.

Greg came by his love for the Columbia Valley honestly. He grew up here and has worked alongside his father, the legendary Bill Powers, for decades. He helped Bill plant the family’s 80-acre estate, Badger Mountain Vineyard, and worked there as vineyard manager for its first eight years. Greg oversaw the vineyard’s development, its early transition to organic production, and the design and building of the winery.

Greg became a full-time winemaker in 1990. Since then, production has grown from 100,000 gallons to 500,000 gallons. Wine Spectator has recognized Powers Winery as a rising star, and Wine Enthusiast has named it one of the 50 Great U.S. Cabernet Producers. But Greg is not about to take all the credit. He focuses on vineyard selection and the quality of the fruit. “I want lush, full flavors that continue to develop and evolve after bottling,” Greg says.

Through the years, Greg has cultivated strong partnerships with some of Washington’s most dedicated growers in several appellations who share Powers Winery’s respect for the land and meticulous attention to detail.

“One of the benefits of working with many of the same growers season after season is an increased understanding of each vineyard’s aim and the characteristics of its fruit,” Greg explains. “Over the years I have become more attuned to reading the grapes and much more hands on throughout the production process.” The winery also continually sources new vineyards to take the fullest advantage of the state’s many microclimates.

The tasting room, perched on the southern slope of Badger Mountain, is a great spot for visitors to sample the wines and enjoy a picnic. It’s the best way to appreciate the devotion, experience, and integrity that go into each and every Powers wine.
