Miraflores: Tuscan-Inspired Escape
Although Miraflores is relatively new on the wine tasting maps, it has already earned a place at the top of the savvy wine tourist’s list of places to visit. It’ s just a short drive along winding country roads from the old gold rush town of Placerville until one comes upon this stunning winery, perched on a hill above undulating vineyards and pine forests. First-time visitors often remark that the winery building, reminiscent of an antiquated Tuscan retreat, makes them feel like they’ve stepped back in time.
The estate was purchased in 1998 and the winery was founded in 2003. The hills that offered the best exposure were planted by vineyard Manager Rick Wickham, who has a profound understanding of the terroir and vineyards, ensuring that they will deliver the best quality fruit.
Engaging Marco Cappelli as winemaker was no accident. Marco studied with André Tchelistcheff and is known for his old-world artisan style of handcrafting wine. Marco’s commitment to making notable wines for Miraflores is demonstrated in the high scores they receive. Peppery Zinfandels with rich profiles along with muscular complex Syrahs are featured in the tasting room lineup. Estate grown Barbera, Tempranillo, Meritage, Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Mourvèdre make tasting at Miraflores a world-class experience. The unique sweet wines are among Winemaker Marco Cappelli’s favorites. Wine Enthusiast awarded 92 points to both the 2008 Botricelli, a beautiful blend of Botrytis Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, and the 2008 Black Muscat.
During the summer weekends, Pairings food and Wine at Miraflores brings masterful chefs to the wineries Vineyard Pavilion to demonstrate their culinary skills. Guests are treated to spectacular four-course wine pairing luncheons. The winery’s exquisite grounds host an extensive events program all year long. Whether it’s a wild game dinner around the holidays, or a vintage car show in the summer, it’s the serenity and fine wines that make Miraflores one of the area’s most appreciated wineries.
