Just west of Healdsburg in glorious Dry Creek Valley, Trattore Farms grows wine grapes and olives in a singular destination. The stunning 40-acre ranch is owned by Tim Bucher who, as a boy, dreamt of owning land in Dry Creek Valley.

Tim also had a lifelong fascination with tractors, so when it came time to name his ranch, it was easy: Trattore (Italian for tractor). The estate vineyards of Trattore Farms run along steep, rolling terrain with their roots entrenched in rich, stone-strewn soils. At harvest, the grapes are “micro-picked” (meaning they’re taste-tested and handpicked vine-by-vine), and handcrafted into Trattore Estate Wines, yielding a portfolio ranging from an aromatic Viognier to a luscious blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Grenache, and Syrah called Tractor Red.

Nearby, 150-year-old olive trees rustle in the breeze. Along with younger trees, they produce succulent olives of many varieties which are harvested and pressed as they come off the tree in one of the ranch’s own two olive oil mills. The olive paste is carefully processed for the ranch’s second enterprise: Dry Creek Olive Company. Ranging from smooth, buttery, Spanish-style blends to spicy, peppery Italian-style blends with fruit flavored oils in between; the ranch’s lineup of olive oils is as tempting as its wines.

Trattore Estate Wines and Dry Creek Olive Company oils have won more than their share of awards. Tim is grateful for this, but something else is more important. “I want people to come to the ranch,” he says. “This land is so special. The products we make are born here, but they are secondary. What’s most important to me is sharing this sense of place.”

This year, while the new Trattore Farms winery is under construction, guests are invited to taste the olive oils and wines at the Dry Creek Olive Oil tasting room, or to schedule a fascinating tour of the Trattore ranch, vineyards, and olive mills to experience a true sense of place.
