In the scenic Columbia River Gorge, Memaloose Winery’s story is one of a hard-working family, a dramatic place, and the love of good food. Earnestly tending twenty varieties at five sustainable estate vineyards, Brian and Maria McCormick and their family craft a small production of vivid wines that reflect their striking home.

The McCormicks came to this singular place to produce cool-climate wines like those of the Old World, planting their first grapes in 2003. With a UC-Davis master’s degree and internship experience in Alsace, France, Brian and his parents, Rob and Barbara, who both have food industry backgrounds, planted five vineyards on either side of the Columbia River. The vineyards are at varying elevations and in different microclimates; two are certified organic and the other three are sustainably farmed.

Unique in the northwest for their authentic Old World-style, the wines are bright and clean with subtle oak and alcohol. They are understated, true to variety wines structured with a vibrant acidity particular to the Columbia Gorge AVA. Crafted by the hands of humble farmers, they are designed for enjoying with food.

The Estate Cabernet Franc has a national reputation for its Loire Valley style and varietal character. There are also a Barbera, a Riesling, and a Primitivo under the Idiot’s Grace label. The winery has a broad selection of white wines with seven in total, all dazzling with acidity and various fruit flavors.

In addition to the distinctive wines, the tasting room is stunning. At the convergence of the Klickitat and Columbia Rivers and conveniently on Highway 14 in Lyle, Washington, guests can soak in the view on the deck or watch storms through the windows. The line-up changes frequently so guests can enjoy different wines with each visit.

Memaloose Winery is a magnificent place to enjoy a glass of “Old World, Northwest” wine and experience the impressive beauty of the Columbia River Gorge.
