Running more than 80 miles long and 4,000 feet deep, the Columbia River Gorge forms a spectacular, natural scenic destination.
At every turn you’ll find jaw-dropping natural beauty, so bring your binoculars and follow some of these gorgeous scenic routes.
Oregon
The Historic Columbia River Highway
It’s hard to believe that this is the “main drag” on Oregon’s side of the river! Even without exiting, you can view several different cascading waterfalls. But do stop at a hiking trail or picnic area along the way.
Larch Mountain Viewpoint
Leave the Historic Columbia River Highway east of Corbett and follow the sign for Larch Mountain. Follow the drive up the mountain (a 4,000-foothigh extinct volcano) for 14 miles. From there, you can walk along a short trail that leads from a picnic area to a panoramic viewpoint of the Gorge, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Jefferson.
Panorama Point
Stretching from Mt. Hood to the Columbia River Gorge, Panorama Point was aptly named, with views of more than 15,000 acres of orchards and vineyards. Drive to the east end of Hood River and turn south on Route 35. Head south until you see the sign for Panorama Point. After a left turn, head south about one mile on Eastside Road, then turn left on a road that will take you to the top of the hill.
Washington
The Carson Route
Follow Highway 14 to Carson, and then head north on Wind River Highway to the Wind River Recreation Area. At the top of the Oldman Pass, turn left at FS 51 Curly Creek and look for the McClellan Viewpoint for an outstanding distant view of Mt. St. Helens. For an even closer view of this stunning volcano, continue on FS 90, then north on FS 25, then left on FS 99 to Windy Ridge and Spirit Lake.
Mt. Adams Country Tour
Take a fun two-hour road trip highlighted by breathtaking views of Mt. Adams. Follow Highway 141 from Bingen to BZ Corners and continue toward Glenwood. Head west back toward Trout Lake. Return back to Hwy 14 by heading south on Hwy 141.
Klickitat River Trail
The Klickitat Trail follows the Klickitat River, designated as Wild and Scenic in 1986. Explore the beautiful river north of Lyle on Highway 142, then proceed to Goldendale. Drive south on Highway 97 to Highway 14, and then head west back to Lyle.
