Awe-inspiring natural scenery and an eye-catching wine barrel– shaped building are the first indication to visitors to Cache Creek Vineyards and Winery that they’re in for a very special experience. The sprawling property includes picnic areas, bocce courts, a tranquil waterfall, and the unique winery building, made out of reclaimed redwood from a local water tank. The winery just opened its doors to the public in July of 2014, but the vineyards and the wines are anything but new.

The vineyard was planted in 1999 by Bill “Poppo” Van Pelt, who was greeted by a herd of tule elk when he first set foot on the land. He fell in love with the majestic creatures and made it his mission to preserve the land, by planting various grasses for them to feed on and creating several ponds for them to drink from. He developed a strong kinship with the elk, and when Poppo passed away in 2004, a herd of elk appeared during his memorial service as if to say good-bye to their dear friend

The honor of carrying on Poppo’s legacy was entrusted to his son, Don Van Pelt, who built the tasting room as an oasis for locals and travelers alike who wish to enjoy the wines and the serene atmosphere that pays homage to nature, the tule elk, and Poppo.

Cache Creek hired veteran Lake County Winemaker Derek Holstein in 2005. Since then, annual production has grown to about 4,000 cases of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah. In 2014 alone, several of the wines won Gold medals at the American Fine Wine, San Francisco Chronicle, Orange County Fair, and the Riverside International Wine Competitions.

Visitors of Cache Creek Vineyards are in for a truly unique experience, whether they are tasting at the bar, outside on the patio, or enjoying a full day of fun with friends on the amazing property
