SIP TRIP — Two Days in the Alps of Washington

Nestled in the foothills of the Cascades on the sunny side of Washington state, Leavenworth is located two hours east of Seattle. This charming Bavarian Village is an exciting hub for art, culinary experiences, and adventure! The wine is as spectacular as the region itself and, with around 25 wineries and tasting rooms pouring award-winning wines, Leavenworth is an ideal destination getaway.

7:00 am Savor a bright morning wake-up, assisted by a little local flavor at J5 Coffee. The frothy Cortado made with microroasted beans is the definition of starting the day out right. Grab a quick pastry at Bavarian Bakery or Homefires Bakery and head out Icicle Road to the Icicle Gorge Trail, four miles of spectacular rolling riverfront walk.

12:00 pm Your trail work has earned you a bite of Bavaria, so have lunch at Munchen Haus or the Leavenworth Sausage Garten. Both are outdoors, and both offer beer and brats. Prost!

1:00 pm Feeling adventurous? River raft or go zip lining at Leavenworth Ziplines. Or challenge yourself to mountain biking on one of the many rustic trails, like “For the Boys,” which finishes at the historic Ski Hill lodge near the outdoor Sound of Music theater stage.

5:00 pm Time for wine! On Ninth Street in downtown Bavarian Village, visit The Wine Cellar, with seven Washington tasting rooms. There are also more than a dozen tasting rooms along Front and Eighth Streets to explore including Boudreaux Cellars.

6:30 pm Just outside of town is the family-run Icicle Ridge Winery. Discover the white Merlot while you enjoy live music and great company or take a “wine hike” through the pleasing property. The handcrafted log home/winery, built by founders Louie and Judy Wagoner, is charming any time of the year.

8:00 pm Time to dine! Find a polished, thoughtfully sourced farm-to-table menu that changes daily at Watershed Café. Enjoy a relaxing evening on the patio with an unbeatable view of Wedge Mountain and Icicle Canyon. Wrap up this exquisite day with handmade artisan chocolates from Schocolat.

7:00 am Hey, who set the alarm? Turn it off and enjoy your well-appointed guest room at the Bavarian Lodge.

8:00 am OK … now it’s a more reasonable time to rise and shine! The lodge has tempting breakfast offerings, but don’t miss the Alphorn concert on the balcony of Enzian Inn (performed daily at 8:15 and 9:15 am). Say “hello” to the goats as they watch over the inn’s 18-hole putting course, then head to O’Grady’s Pantry & Mercantile at Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort for some Corned Beef Benedict or to Good Mood Food offering fresh juices, coffee, and tasty quiches. If you chose O’Grady’s, stroll through the organic garden, take the art walk featuring many sculptures, including a Dale Chihuly original, and check out the calendar to see what’s playing at Sleeping Lady’s sister property, Icicle Creek Center for the Arts.

12:00 pm Order a light lunch (to stay light on your feet) at Sulla Vita. Two great options: Cauliflower and Parsnip Gratin or a wood-fired Prosciutto and Fig Pizza. Or go to South for Latin-inspired fare such as Grilled Street Corn Carnitas and a local favorite, the Basil Margarita.

1:30 pm Time for another decision. The region around Leavenworth boasts 800+ miles of trails and the region’s rock climbing is ranked as one of the nation’s best. Join the Northwest Mountain School for a climb or, if you’d rather just chill, opt for a massage or other treatment at Alpine Spa.

4:00 pm Arrive at Silvara Cellars and drink in the gorgeous valley view, then at Wedge Mountain Winery ask for a ride on Old Blue, the tractor, after a taste or two! Another must-stop is Eagle Creek Winery for live music and wine flights.

7:00 pm There are so many options for dinner! If the stars align for you, there will be an opening at Mana Restaurant, serving an eight-course culinary experience celebrating locally foraged ingredients. Or discover Visconti’s, featuring handmade pastas, house-cured meats, and an award-winning wine list from Wine Spectator. No meal is complete without the handmade gelato.
