When Miljenko “Mike” Grgich and his business partners Austin Hills and his sister, Mary Lee Strebl, of the Hills Brothers coffee family, broke ground on Independence Day 1977, there was little traffic on Napa Valley’s Highway 29. Instead of Cabernet Sauvignon, most of the valley’s farmers made their living from growing prunes and walnuts, and there wasn’t a celebrity chef or boutique hotel in sight.

Today, 40 years later, that’s all changed in the Napa Valley. Yet Grgich Hills Estate is one of the few wineries to remain family owned and operated and still in business after four decades.

A Vintners Hall of Fame inductee, Mike first earned worldwide recognition when his 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay won the 1976 Paris Tasting, beating the best of France. His victory in Paris attracted Austin and Mary Lee as business partners to launch what is now known as Grgich Hills Estate. The winery immediately became renowned for Chardonnay when its inaugural 1977 vintage was called “The best Chardonnay in the world,” triumphing over 221 top Chardonnays in a blind tasting organized by the Chicago Tribune.

The winery has continued receiving international awards for its estate-grown wines and has been recognized as a leader in natural winegrowing and sustainability. The winery farms without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides; relies on wild yeast fermentation; and uses Mike’s passion and art to handcraft food-friendly, balanced, and elegant wines.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2017, the winery is releasing a limited-production, elegant 40th Anniversary Chardonnay and hosted a party at the winery in July to thank everyone for their support. According to Mike, “I have been so lucky, and so many wonderful people have believed in me and helped me along the way. Looking back over my life, I see a consistent theme: work hard and learn something new every day.”

Grgich Hills Marinated Crab Salad

Grgich Hills Estate served this salad at their Holiday Food & Wine Pairing event last year and it was a hit! The spicy, rich crab pairs well with their Fume Blanc--100% Sauvignon Blanc made from grapes grown naturally, without artificial pesticides or herbicides.
