When Miljenko “Mike” Grgich and his business partners Austin Hills and his sister, Mary Lee Strebl, of the Hills Brothers coffee family, broke ground on Independence Day 1977, there was little traffic on Napa Valley’s Highway 29. Instead of Cabernet Sauvignon, most of the valley’s farmers made their living from growing prunes and walnuts, and there wasn’t a celebrity chef or boutique hotel in sight.

Today, 41 years later, that’s all changed in the Napa Valley. Yet Grgich Hills Estate is one of the few wineries to remain family-owned and -operated and still in business after four decades.
A Vintners Hall of Fame inductee, Mike first earned worldwide recognition when his 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay won the 1976 Paris Tasting, beating the best of France.
The history of the winery continues with Mike Grgich’s 95th birthday celebration. Celebrating his 95th birthday is truly a remarkable milestone for Mike, and the winery is excited to pay tribute to this momentous occasion all year long. The celebration was kicked off on March 1st in La Quinta, California, where Mike spends the winter, with a special vintner dinner at Morgan’s in the Desert. Besides an open house on May 5th in Napa Valley, the winery will host a series of birthday-themed vintner dinners across the country so everyone can participate in wishing Mike “Happy Birthday.” A special social media campaign, #MikeMoments, has been launched to bring these events to life across social media. And, of course, no Grgich Hills Estate celebration is complete without a new 95th birthday commemorative beret.

Q&A with President Violet Grgich

“Our values come from my father, who was told by his father, ‘Every day, do your best, learn something new, and make a friend.” —VIOLET GRGICH
Happy 95th Birthday to your dad, Mike Grgich! How are you celebrating? This is a very important milestone for my father, and we are all excited to commemorate this momentous year. My dad is one of the last living American legends in Napa Valley and in the wine industry. He came to the United States with $32 sewn into the sole of his shoe. With a lot of hard work and perseverance, he achieved his American dream. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate him, and his many achievements and contributions.
Also, congratulations on your promotion to president. What is your business philosophy? My dad started this winery with a dream to make some of the greatest wines in the world. We are fortunate to have 41 successful years, and my goal is to continue this success. I’ve had the privilege of working in every facet of this business, starting at a very young age in the cellar and lab and then in the tasting room, sales, and accounting. Through the years, I’ve been able to experience firsthand what it takes to make a successful winery run smoothly. I’ve learned from my father that it’s important to work hard, but more importantly to work smart and take joy in everything we do.
What practices and ideals do you consider to be core to Grgich Hills Estate—qualities you’ll want to protect? The heart of Grgich Hills is to make wines of the highest quality and consistency that are known for their balance, elegance, food-friendliness, and longevity. We are deeply committed to natural winegrowing and are stewards of the land. We own all of our vineyards and farm them naturally and sustainably without artificial pesticides or herbicides. Our values come from my father, who was told by his father, “Every day do your best, learn something new, and make a friend.” We all live these values every day, and that creates success and a sustainable legacy for future generations.

Grgich Hills Marinated Crab Salad

Grgich Hills Estate served this salad at their Holiday Food & Wine Pairing event last year and it was a hit! The spicy, rich crab pairs well with their Fume Blanc--100% Sauvignon Blanc made from grapes grown naturally, without artificial pesticides or herbicides.
