Story

A TREASURE FOR LOVERS OF WINE and art alike, The Hess Collection is a worldclass winery that combines founder Donald Hess’s passion for unique vineyards and excellent wine with his appreciation of fine modern art. Hidden away in the hills of Napa along a scenic road ascending Mount Veeder, it provides a world of exploration with an excellent portfolio of wines, an exquisite contemporary art gallery, and a variety of unique guest experiences.

Swiss-born Donald Hess first came to the Napa Valley in the early 1970s on a business trip and a quest for a beautiful vineyard that could produce quality wine. His research led him to Mount Veeder, where he discovered vineyards with an ideal combination of soils and microclimates for yielding wine grapes of distinct character. He acquired his first land on the mountain in 1978 and started to make handcrafted, small-lot wines, marking the beginning of The Hess Collection. Today, with the reins in the hands of Tim Persson, Donald’s son-in-law, and Tim’s wife, Sabrina, the winery remains family owned.

The Hess Collection Visitor Center tops most Napa Valley must-visit lists for good reason. The winery, housed in a stone building originally constructed in 1903, first opened to the public in 1989. Within its walls, one discovers what is perhaps the most impressive private contemporary art collection in the world. For more than 40 years, Donald Hess has acquired paintings and sculptures that he’s found visually touching and a portion of this artwork is on display in a stunning two-story gallery. The collection is free to the public so guests can take an impromptu self-guided tour and see the works of renowned and emerging artists including Frank Stella, Franz Gertsch, and Francis Bacon.

There’s also a wonderful menu of private educational tours and exclusive experiences which can be arranged in advance. The Vine to Table Excursion and Luncheon begins with a guided ATV vineyard ride through Mont La Salle Vineyard, exploring a range of Napa Green sustainable practices. Guests then enjoy a threecourse farm-to-table luncheon featuring menu items from the winery’s culinary gardens paired with estate wines—courtesy of the winery’s Executive Chef Chad Hendrickson. The Tour of the Palate starts with a guided tour of the art museum followed by a pairing of three current release wines expertly matched with three exquisite culinary creations from the chef. Each tasting experience is a sensory adventure demonstrating the exceptional quality of the wines of The Hess Collection.
