THE STRIKINGLY DISTINCTIVE and diverse quality of California’s Central Coast wine region are consistently demonstrated at J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines. The winery was founded by Jerry Lohr, who, for the past four decades, has played a leading role in bringing the area to prominence.

Jerry was one of a handful of early pioneers to realize the inherent potential of Monterey and Paso Robles for producing high quality grapes and superb wines. His instincts led him to two regions about 75 miles apart. In the early 1970s, he chose Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco district for its cool, windy climate and rocky soils as ideal for Chardonnay. In the 1980s, he recognized the potential of Paso Robles for growing Bordeaux varietals, especially Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 2017, Jerry was named both Wine Enthusiast’s American Wine Legend and Wine Business Monthly’s Innovator of the Year. Today, the second generation of the Lohr family—Steve, Cynthia, and Lawrence—work closely with their iconic father.
Vintage to vintage, the Lohrs are committed to demonstrating family, sense of place, and craft through their wines. There’s always something new to try. Last year, when Jerry turned 80, J. Lohr released J. Lohr Signature, a new ultra-luxury Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon in his honor. This impressive new “top of the portfolio” release joins J. Lohr’s amazing lineup of stellar Cabernets. The J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon, consistently delicious and affordable, is one of the country’s most popular red wines. The flagship Vineyard Series Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon is pure Paso Robles in a glass. And the uber-limited trio of Bordeaux-style blends—Cuvée PAU, Cuvée St. E., and Cuvée POM—are favorites among critics.

To exemplify the diversity of the Central Coast, there are two J. Lohr Wine Centers: one in the Paso Robles countryside and the other near downtown San Jose. The Paso Robles Wine Center on Airport Road is a must-see for visitors to the region and reservations are not required to use the picnic grounds. The San Jose Wine Center, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, hosts a steady stream of winemaker dinners, Wine & Cheese Fridays, classes, and private events.

What’s next for J. Lohr? Happily, Steve, Cynthia, and Lawrence were raised in the business. Their experience and passion ensures that one of California’s historic, best known wineries is in good hands—today and for the future.
