Story

It’s no coincidence that the Central Coast’s emergence as a world-class winegrowing region runs parallel with the establishment and growth of J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines. Founder Jerry Lohr is one of the region’s pioneers and has played a larger-than-life in bringing the area to prominence.

When he decided to grow wine grapes along the Central Coast, Jerry’s instincts led him to two regions located about 75 miles apart. In the early 1970s, he chose Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco district for its cool, windy climate and rocky soils as ideal for Chardonnay. In the 1980s, he recognized the potential of Paso Robles for growing Bordeaux varietals, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, given the area’s rich soils and dramatic diurnal temperature swings between warm days and cool nights.

Jerry’s prescience and passion for quality have since made J. Lohr one of California’s most respected and trusted wineries. An industry icon, at age 80 Jerry Lohr is still deeply involved in the day-to-day vineyard and winery decisions and operations. Earlier this year, he received Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s American Wine Legend Award, and recently Wine Business Monthly named Jerry its Innovator of the Year.

In honor of Jerry’s milestone birthday, J. Lohr recently debuted J. Lohr Signature, a new ultra-luxury Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon. As Jerry says, “We have worked diligently since the early days to produce a Cabernet the equal of any in the world. I believe we have succeeded with this first-ever vintage of J. Lohr Signature Cabernet Sauvignon.”

This impressive, new “top of the portfolio” release joins the award-winning roster of J. Lohr’s stellar Cabernet program. The consistently delicious and affordable J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the country’s most popular red wines. The flagship Vineyard Series Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon is pure Paso Robles in a glass. And the uber-limited trio of Bordeaux-style blends— Cuvée PAU, Cuvée St. E., and Cuvée POM—are connoisseur and reviewer favorites.

Given J. Lohr’s pioneering role in Paso Robles wine country, the Paso Robles Wine Center on Airport Road is a must-see for visitors. J. Lohr also has a tasting room near downtown San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley. The San Jose Wine Center hosts a steady stream of winemaker dinners, Wine & Cheese Fridays, classes, and private events.

Jerry’s daughter, Cynthia Lohr, is part of the ownership team and works as the winery’s trade and brand advocate. Cynthia attributes J. Lohr’s longterm popularity to adherence to the family’s core values. As Cynthia says, “We have circumnavigated fads in favor of staying true to our vineyard-driven wines, which has given us enormous staying power and has also allowed us to retain consistency and quality from vintage to vintage. Most of all, we’re fortunate to have many passionate fans and club members who have grown up with J. Lohr over many years and are still celebrating with us.”

What’s next? Happily, the second generation of the Lohr family—Steve, Cynthia, and Lawrence—were raised in the business. They’ve worked closely with their father in every aspect of the company. Their experience and passion ensures that one of California’s historic, best known wineries is in good hands—today and for the future.
