Founded a decade ago by Craig and Nancy Stoller, Sextant Wines demonstrates the remarkable potential of San Luis Obispo County with a compelling portfolio of world-class wines. They started their own vineyard in 2001, planting clones from several certified French, Portuguese, and Spanish winegrape selections, as well as rootstock from UC-Davis. They produce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from their cool climate vineyards, but their specialties are distinct Zinfandels, GSMs, and a Bordeaux blend. The winery is devoted to expanding the horizons of California’s Central Coast by using carefully selected Old World varieties harvested from three vineyards from three distinct AVAs: Chalk Knoll Vineyards in San Ardo, Sextant Vineyards in Templeton, and the historic MacGregor Vineyards in Edna Valley. Winemaker Steve Martell joined Sextant in 2009. He spends a considerable amount of time in the vineyards, getting to know each vine. His refined sensory skill, combined with his innate natural winemaking approach, is a perfect match for the style of wine for which Sextant is now known.
Sextant has two inviting tasting rooms: one in West Paso Robles, and the other in the charming hamlet of Old Edna, in an historic, century-plus-old building that, through the years, has served as a general mercantile, a dance hall with speakeasy, and a post office.
