Story

Sheltered from maritime influences by the towering Cascade Mountain range, Goose Ridge Estate Vineyard and Winery’s 1,400 acres of grapevines receive less than eight inches of rainfall annually. They are planted in a south-to-north configuration on a gently sloped, south-facing site to maximize sun exposure. The wine grapes ripen slowly until their flavors are rich and full of character.

Goose Ridge was founded in 1999 by the Monson family, multi-generational Columbia Valley farmers who had the foresight to seek guidance from one of Washington State’s most experienced and respected viticulturists, the late Dr. Walter Clore. The Monsons have always believed that great wines start in the vineyard. Their grapes are grown in low yields to intensify their character and complexity.

In 2010, the family hired veteran winemaker Kendall Mix to work as their head winemaker. Kendall spends a lot of time in the vineyard and works closely with Goose Ridge’s vineyard manager to identify the best blocks for the small-lot, high-quality wines he plans to make. The Goose Ridge portfolio features an exceptional lineup of single varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Riesling), as well as some excellent signature blends.

The wines routinely receive their share of attention and accolades. Vintage after vintage, the winery’s distinctive Vireo, a handcrafted blend of Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, wins high praise from the press. The 2006 vintage was listed in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 with an impressive rating of 93 points. But that’s not anything unusual for Goose Ridge. The estate proprietary blend, Sol Duc Meritage, routinely scores 90 plus points from Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate. And the singular varietals fare just as well.

Goose Ridge Estate Vineyard and Winery is located a short distance from Red Mountain. It’s easy to find from the interstate, and many visitors bring picnics so they can fully relax and enjoy the wines and the unsurpassed view.
