Dedicated to creating classic Rhône-style wines that capture the true character of El Dorado County, David Girard Vineyards was founded by David Girard, who believed in the great potential of El Dorado County for growing winegrapes. He purchased a stunning 85-acre property in the heart of Gold Country, just a mile from where gold was first discovered, with 14 acres planted to Merlot.
For the first 10 years, David sold his Merlot grapes on a 10-year contract to Robert Mondavi Winery, but he and Ron Mansfield, a widely respected grape grower in the region, had a hunch. They took a trip to the Rhône Valley in Southern France, which convinced the men that the terroir was quite similar. When David returned, he planted Rhône varieties. Today, the wineries’ 38 vineyard acres are mostly Rhône and they’re undergoing a transition to organic farming.
Under the expert guidance of Winemaker and Vineyard Manager Grayson Hartley, the winery creates a splendid portfolio of handcrafted wines including Viognier, Roussanne, Vermentino, Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre. The wines are routinely praised for their seamless balance, layered construction, and compatibility with food.
