It's no longer common to find a family-owned and operated estate winery in Sonoma Valley, but then, there’s nothing common about B.R. Cohn Winery. It was founded by Bruce Cohn, whose lifelong music career is highlighted by the 40 years he has managed the famous American rock band, The Doobie Brothers. In fact, Bruce, who has spent most of his life in Sonoma County, first purchased his land in 1974 to preserve a quality of life for his family and himself.

When Bruce bought the land, it was an old dairy farm with vineyard acres and a grove of 150-yearold French Picholine olive trees. For the next decade, he sold his grapes to neighboring wineries and read up on grape growing. In 1984, Bruce established B.R. Cohn Winery, and in 1990, B.R. Cohn Olive Oil Company was born. Today, Dan Cohn, Bruce’s eldest son, is running both the Winery and Olive Oil Company, carrying the family’s wine legacy into its second generation.

Olive Hill Estate Vineyard is truly an exceptional place. Because it is flanked by the Sonoma Mountains to the west, it receives less coastal fog than most parts of Sonoma Valley, which increases the grapevines’ exposure to the sun. An underground natural hot spring also runs beneath the vineyard, warming the soil. These unique attributes provide warmer daytime conditions that lead to early bud break, an extended growing season, and an early harvest. Late in the day, the vines are blessed by a gentle channel of coastal breezes that cools the grapes down. This singular microclimate is responsible for creating the exceptional wines for which B.R. Cohn Winery is known.

Without a doubt, the Olive Hill Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is the winery’s flagship wine. Each vintage expresses the unique qualities of its vineyard with pronounced aromatics, complex flavors, silky tannins, and a soft, flavorful finish. Last year, the winery enhanced its portfolio with the introduction of the Select Block wines, a new tier of ultra-premium Estate Cabernet Sauvignons. This was the vision of Winemaker Tom Montgomery, who handcrafts each wine from select estate vineyard blocks— only in optimal growing years—as a tribute to the exceptional qualities of B.R. Cohn Cabernet. Currently, there are two Select Block wines. Select Block 3 is selected from the oldest vineyard block at Olive Hill Estate, planted in 1973; Select Block 7 is from the oldest Entav clone plantings, dating back to the late 1990s.

Beyond exceptional grapevines, 469 French Picholine trees, dating back to the mid-1800s, grace the estate. Their distinctive fruit is handharvested each November and pressed into the Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil. B.R. Cohn Olive Oil Company offers a full line of olive oils, finishing oils, and vinegars, available at the winery, online, and in specialty stores across the country.

Visitors to B.R. Cohn Winery in Sonoma Valley like to walk among these beautiful ancient olive trees that surround the winery. They also enjoy lingering in and around the tasting room located in an old farmhouse where, as a boy, Dan lived with his family. Considering the winery’s rich background in music and entertainment, it’s not surprising it hosts many music events, from small concerts around the tasting room, to music festivals in the beautiful outdoor grass amphitheater. For those who love excellent wines, olive oils, music, and a relaxed family vibe, B.R. Cohn Winery hits all the high notes.
