At the southern tip of Alexander Valley, near the confluence of the Knights Valley and Chalk Hill appellations, Lancaster Estate enjoys an enviable spot ideal for growing Bordeaux varieties. Comprised of 53 undulating acres, the vines are planted on hillsides in an inspiring range of microclimates. This diversity yields a splendid lineup of distinctive estate wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc.
The family-owned winery was founded by Ed Simpkins in 1995, when he purchased the former Maacama Creek Winery and renamed it Lancaster Estate to honor his paternal heritage. Beyond the family crest adorning the wine labels and winery architecture, a dedication to family is evident in the vineyards, where sustainable farming practices are used to maintain the integrity of the land. Cover crops improve drainage, replenish nutrients, and reduce erosion, while raptors and beneficial insects eliminate pests. The entire estate is currently being evaluated in terms of soil structure, microclimates, and much more to optimize the vineyards’ potential for future vintages and generations.
Winemaker Jesse Katz, who came to Lancaster Estate in 2010, works closely with the vineyard team and applies gentle, time-honored practices in the winery to foster the purest expression and character of the vineyards in the wines.
Guests are always greeted with divine scenery and magnificent wines at Lancaster Estate, but if they make a reservation in advance, they’re in for a real treat. The Estate Tour & Tasting Experience offers a tour of the vineyards, production facility, and the wine caves built into the hillside—followed by a seated educational tasting with four estate wines. The Estate Tour & Tasting with Artisan Cheeses Experience offers the same itinerary, followed by a guided cheese and wine pairing.
Lancaster Estate is a singular place, and those who visit and taste its classic Bordeaux wines feel very lucky indeed.
