Story

When the talented team of Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses, and Heather Patz founded Patz & Hall in 1988, they were fueled by a shared passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. That passion has never waned and, today, Patz & Hall is one of California’s most highly regarded wineries with a portfolio of exceptional limited-production Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.

The four founders attribute their success to their integrated approach: each founder focuses on a different area of the winery’s operations based on his or her background and expertise. They are also committed to maintaining close, lasting relationships with many of California’s finest growers, who are now cornerstones of the winery’s fine reputation.

In 2014, the enchanting new Sonoma House at Patz & Hall opened its doors in the heart of Sonoma wine country. Located a short distance from Sonoma Square, the stunning building is set on an idyllic property surrounded by vineyards and mountains. Inside, there are several inviting spots designed for intimate tasting experiences, while outside, a gorgeous patio—ideal for a warm summer or autumn afternoon—awaits.

Every inch of the Sonoma House at Patz & Hall is dedicated to greeting guests and making them feel like old friends as they sample the exquisite wines. There are several tasting options that require advance reservations. For a more casual wine tasting experience in a convivial setting, they offer seated tastings at a stylish and inviting tasting bar.

For those seeking something immersive, the Salon Experience is a guided tasting where guests enjoy six single-vineyard-designate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs alongside delectable season-inspired food bites created by Patz & Hall’s private caterer. Deciding in advance on a tasting experience may not be easy but, frankly, one can’t go wrong. With this level of hospitality, top-tier wines, a great outdoor space, and unstoppable views, an unforgettable experience in Sonoma wine country is practically guaranteed.

An Interview with Co-Founder Heather Patz

 

T&T: In two short years, the Sonoma House has become known for its great guest experiences. What’s your secret?

HP: When we first established Patz & Hall almost 30 years ago, we used to invite people into our homes to share our wines. It was a warm, personal, one-on-one approach that reflected our idea of how wine is meant to be shared and enjoyed. When we opened our Sonoma House, we tried to replicate that experience and those ideals. We believe in making a real connection with our guests and in delivering a truly memorable wine tasting experience.

T&T: You’ve added an intriguing tasting option: The Patz & Hall Appellation Tasting. Can you tell us about the format and what we’ll learn?

HP: Because so many of our guests come back again and again, we are always trying to offer great new ways to explore our wines. From our Art Harvest to our Barrel Previews to our Grower Series, we have a history of trying new things. With our new Appellation Tastings, we use our single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs to focus on the characteristics of a specific region, like Carneros, the Russian River Valley, or the Sonoma Coast, and then we go even more in depth to look at the terroirs of the great vineyards we work with in that region.

T&T: We understand you also have a special food and wine experience that highlights seasonality and single vineyard wines. Please tell us more!

HP: Our seated Salon Experience, which includes six Chardonnay and Pinot Noir single-vineyard-designate wines, also comes with locally sourced gourmet food complements. These little dishes are created by Chef Natalie Niksa of La Saison and change quarterly. We love Natalie. She’s a lovely, creative person and an amazing chef. One of the most fun days for our staff is when Natalie brings all of her new creations for us to try. Our staff will all sit down and try everything with different wines to choose the dishes we love the most. Our current menu includes a Lightly Smoked Trout Tuille, Pork Tacos with Vegetable Slaw, and a Short Rib Roulade. They’re delicious!
