Story

When brothers Kenneth and Miles Oswald decided to embark on a winemaking adventure in 2004, they chose the name Standish in honor of their mother’s family’s prolific farming heritage. At that point, they had already been farming apples, pears, and grapes on their ranch (named Day Ranch for the first family who owned it) for 30 years.  Their vineyards had earned a superlative reputation, and were sought after by many prestigious wineries throughout Mendocino, Sonoma, and Napa counties for their award-winning wines.

So the brothers couldn’t be too surprised in 2006 when the first 2004 vintage received such positive reviews. One of the first releases, the 2004 Standish Triangle Block Chinook Pinot Noir was granted a 91-point rating by Wine Enthusiast, which soon after gave the 2005 Standish Mayflower Pinot Noir 95 points. The awards and accolades have not let up since then. In fact, Standish received two of five coveted Gold medals for Pinot Noirs at the 2010 Mendocino County Fair, one for its 2007 Estate Pinot Noir, and the second for its 2007 Pinot Noir Bosc Block.

This kind of consistent praise has put Standish on the map for many wine lovers visiting Mendocino County. They are enthralled when they arrive at the historic Day Ranch, peppered with redwood outbuildings made from native trees. The captivating tasting room, housed in the ranch’s old apple dryer, has been called “the most photogenic tasting room in the valley” by Travel and Leisure. Owner Valerie Oswald is often behind the tasting bar, eager to share her knowledge with visitors. There is an intimate balcony overlooking the orchard for those who want to linger with a glass of wine, and a generous willow tree outside that provides shade for a few picnic tables. Guests are encouraged to spread out their repast, relax, and fully absorb the homey ambience where Standish wines are made.
