Winemaker on site, certified organic, gift shop, pet-friendly, picnic grounds

With a combined career history that includes nursing, the ownership of a pet store, and the founding of a software company, Deanna and Ted Starr became the proud owners of Milano Family Winery in 2001. The winery is the oldest in Hopland and boasts one of Mendocino County’s three remaining hop kilns—the only one still accessible to the public.

Deanna, who formerly worked as a nurse, is the winemaker. “There’s a parallel between nursing and winemaking,” she says. Besides needing to assess the grapes and develop a treatment plan, one has to watch for problems along the way and adjust accordingly. For both, metric math is used, and one must be meticulously clean. And the hop kiln is an ideal lab. “The design of the old building keeps the temperature perfect,” Deanna reports.

She carefully crafts a variety of wines, each tended into a soulful, palate-pleasing delicacy. Limited lots of Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, plus some of the more unique varietals such as Carignane, Charbono, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Valdiguie, compose the portfolio. Deanna loves to make wine blends and even does fun, sassy blends like Big Ass Red, Big Ass Blonde, and Sunshine. Late-harvest Zinfandel and Ports are also a specialty of Milano Winery. Fresh fruit, soft tannins, spicy mouth-filling flavors, and intoxicating aromas and bouquet characterize her wines.

Tasting room guests enjoy exploring them all. They also are intrigued by the winery’s beautiful hop kiln, which they can arrange to tour if they call in advance. Guests are shown how hops were processed as well as how the wine is made. The tasting room is warm, rustic, and intimate. Guests can linger there or head outside to a picnic area overlooking orchards and vineyards. A gaggle of geese, a llama, a pygmy goat, sheep, and even desert tortoises are always on hand to welcome one and all to Milano Family Winery.
