When third-generation grape grower Jim Jacobsen sold his land in Fresno County and purchased the 40 acres that would become Doce Robles Winery’s vineyard in 1996, the Paso Robles wine industry was just getting underway. Jim planted Barbera, Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. As his vines matured, he worked alongside other winegrowers in the area. Jim fondly remembers those early days when he learned to make wine with his neighbors.

In 1998, Jim officially established Doce Robles Winery, and he opened a tasting room in 1999. He hired his wife Maribeth, who also hails from a multi-generation family of Fresno county grape growers, as his first tasting room employee.

From the very first vintage, Doce Robles wines have proven to be something special. Although the 1998 wines came from very young vines, they won some prestigious awards, including two consecutive Best of Class awards for the 1998 Doce Robles Robles Rojos from the California State Fair. The Zinfandel and Barbera also won awards their first harvest year. Year in, year out, Doce Robles wines have stood out from the crowd, possessing bright structure, soft fruit, and moderate levels of alcohol.

“The real work is done in the vineyard,” Jim says. He uses organic and food grade quality fertilizer, greatly reducing the need for insecticides while producing healthy, flavorful fruit. Winemaking is non-invasive, in fact the wines are mostly gravity fed and only pumped twice from the field to the bottle to preserve their fruit character. The Doce Robles tasting room sits behind the family farmhouse on a ridge overlooking vineyards to the east and west. Arriving guests pause to admire the view, pat Ava, the winery dog, and then step inside to taste from the extensive portfolio. Maribeth is often behind the tasting bar and so is daughter Lindsay, eager to greet newcomers, chat a while, and share the wonderful wines of Doce Robles Winery.
