Story

A whole lot of determination, tons of elbow grease, and a knack for doing things right formed the foundation of Pear Valley Vineyards. Tom Maas first envisioned spending his retirement years surrounded by grapevines while stationed at an Army base overlooking the Rhine River in the 1960s.

He and his wife Kathleen bought the existing 20-acre Pear Valley Vineyard in San Miguel in 1999. Five years later, he traded one acre of land they owned in Santa Ana for 82 acres of rolling hillside on the east side of Paso Robles. The new parcel was undeveloped, but Tom rolled up his sleeves and established an infrastructure and then planted the vines. Today Tom and Kathleen own 115 acres of sustainably farmed vineyards, which they hope will be a family legacy for generations to come.

The vineyards are blessed with a myriad of microclimates due to their different soils, elevations, and hill gradations. This provides for experimentation with a variety of grapes. Besides Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Syrah, Pear Valley is planted to about 20 other varieties including Albariño, Aglianico, White Grenache, and Charbono. Winemaker Jared Lee is delighted to work with such an intriguing palette. Besides a long list of fabulous French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese varietals, the Pear Valley portfolio includes some excellent blends. Named to honor friends and wine club members who are fighting cancer, the 2009 Inspiration is a delicate blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre.

Built by Tom himself and a crew of workers, Pear Valley’s magnificent winery and tasting room are—as he once pictured—surrounded with grapevines on the east side of Paso Robles. A singular knoll overlooking the vineyards waits for a picnic or intimate wedding, and a beautiful banquet room just off the tasting room is ideal for celebrations of any kind. From the taste of it, there’s going to be a lot to celebrate at Pear Valley in the years to come.
