A love for the Santa Ynez Valley, entertaining guests, and Creole cuisine first inspired Iris Rideau to establish her vineyard and winery in 1997. She had intended to build a home and retire in the peaceful and beautiful wine country setting, but, as a successful entrepreneur, Iris simply couldn’t resist. Within just a matter of years, she had built two homes and a winery, planted a vineyard, and opened the tasting room doors along an enchanting road in the heart of Santa Barbara wine country.

Iris spent her childhood in a Creole household in New Orleans where French was the first language and Creole dishes like okra gumbo, fried oysters, and jambalaya were lovingly prepared and served. When she decided to make wine, she chose to dedicate her estate vineyard entirely to Rhône varieties. These top-quality grapes are now crafted into exceptional Syrah, Viognier, Mourvèdre, Roussanne, and Grenache varietals—perfect accompaniments to Creole cuisine.

From the very beginning Iris has greeted tasting room guest guests with samplings of food to complement her wines. This custom was met with such enthusiasm, Iris began monthly Creole-style dinners to give California residents a taste of her hometown. Festive winemaker dinners and other events are hosted in the property’s 1884 adobe building, restored by Iris. The enticing Creole dishes served at each event are always the talk of the valley.

Iris has also hired Winemaker Adrienne St. John, a fourth-generation member of a Sonoma winemaking family who oversees all wine production, which has grown to around 8,000 cases of a dozen different varietals per year.

Rideau wines are utterly delightful. Two signatures must not be missed: The 100 percent Stainless Steel Estate Viognier captures the grape’s bright notes as well as the attention of red wine–only drinkers, while the Chateau Duplantier Cuvée, which bears Iris’ family name, is a perfect expression of her Old World heritage and her beloved Santa Ynez Valley.
