Situated just eight miles east as the crow flies from downtown Napa, Ledgewood Creek Winery & Vineyards invites wine lovers to explore a new valley. Native Americans named it Suisun (Sue Soon) Valley for the west wind that drifts in from the San Francisco Bay. Lying just an hour’s drive from the city, the Suisun Valley is an easy day trip for

San Francisco residents who want to discover something new. That’s how Bunny and Dean Frisbie first discovered this rural community. They were drawn to its tranquility and were impressed by the fertility of its soils. In 1985, they bought a pear orchard and converted it to vineyards. At first, they sold all their grapes to leading wineries in the Napa and Sonoma valleys. After a little more than a decade, they decided to make their own wine and recruited Winemaker Larry Langbehn to consult for them. The 2001 harvest produced their first wines, which were released in 2002.

The Ledgewood Creek portfolio currently features estate-grown and bottled Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Merlot, Syrah, and Grenache. GSM, a delightful Rhône red blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, has won the attention of wine critics. In fact, Ledgewood Creek’s 2008 vintage won a gold medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. There’s also a killer Cabernet Sauvignon, made from Napa Valley grapes.

According to Bunny and Dean’s son James, who is in charge of sales and marketing for the winery, Ledgewood Creek’s philosophy is: “If it is broken, fix it. And if it is not broken, how can we improve it?” The winery is committed to sustainable farming practices and is always finding new ways to protect and nurture the Suisun Valley’s pristine ecosystem.

The large, airy tasting room, surrounded by the vineyards, offers beautiful views of the golden hills and free tastings of Ledgewood Creek’s current releases. It quickly becomes evident to newcomers that they have discovered a new frontier worth further exploration.
