Matthew Hatcher’s winemaking talents have put Hatcher Winery on the “don’t miss” list of Foothill Wineries. He and his brother, Sewell, pride themselves in making a limited production of handcrafted wines. The two brothers’ personalities shine in everything they do, so it’s no wonder that people respond passionately to the Hatchers and their wine. Both men are humble and laidback, but everything is done without compromise. Their goal is to work hard, make the best wine possible using the highest quality fruit and barrels, and still have fun. Ever grateful to their customers and friends, they hold two annual events at the winery, which have been described as the best parties in Calaveras County. For the Hatchers it’s all about the wine, the people, and the fun. It’s their way of thanking others for their success.

Matt works closely with vineyard managers in growing premium fruit. He also carefully selects other grapes from the Sierra Foothills. Once the grapes are harvested, Matt, with the help of Assistant Winemaker Scotty Hancock, concentrates on producing powerful, yet balanced, red wines and classic white wines using either the best French oak barrels, or a mix of American Oak and some steel barrels for fermentation.

Hatcher Winery currently limits wine production to small batches and is best known for their Estate Zinfandel which is grown in the winery’s Angels Camp Vineyard. Hatcher currently produces four excellent Zin varietals, along with Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Rose, Tempranillo, Syrah, Mourvedre, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Barbera, and Matt’s favorite, Cabernet Franc. Hatcher Winery also makes a Meritage and a popular and highly awarded Viognier ice wine named for the Bob Dylan song “Quinn the Eskimo” and for the lyrics “I like my sugar sweet.” Wine tourers can sample them at the Hatcher Winery tasting room in the cellar of the historic Segale Building in downtown Murphys, where Sewell just might be sharing his favorite new Bluegrass band music.
