A magnolia graces the label of every bottle of wine that Krutz Family Cellars produces. It was an obvious design choice for Patrick Krutz, who hails from Mississippi, where the official state flower and tree is the magnolia. It also symbolizes perseverance and a love of nature.

Patrick came to California from Mississippi in 2002 and started making his own wine the following year. He pours his wine in Santa Rosa’s Vintner’s Square. “Right now, I’m most excited about the Chardonnay,” Patrick says this has a lot to do with the grapes. They come from the Sleepy Hollow Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The old vine Wente clone Chardonnay grapes produced their last vintage in 2009 before being replanted. “The vines were grafted onto their original rootstock as well, which is a bit of a rarity,” Patrick says.

Krutz Family Cellars was recently named one of the Seven New Stars of California Chardonnay by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Another source of pride and kudos for Patrick is the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stagecoach Vineyard. It garnered 95 points from Wine Enthusiast and marks the second straight Top 100 wine selections for a Krutz Family Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2007 vintage consists of 90 percent Sauvignon and 10 percent Malbec. “There’s something about those nooks and canyons in Stagecoach Vineyard that is great for Cabernet,” Patrick says.

His tasting bar in Santa Rosa’s Vintner’s Square is officially open Friday through Sunday, but Patrick encourages wine tasters to make an appointment for other days as well. Guests appreciate his open, hospitable attitude—a quality he attributes to his Southern upbringing. “We believe in backyards, barbecues, and family,” Patrick says. “Wine greases the wheels a bit.” It’s important to Patrick that tasting room guests have a chance to relax, reconnect, and get to know the winemaker a little better.

“Krutz Family Cellars is just as much about who I am as the wines themselves,” Patrick explains.
