Hovey Winery: Exotic Varietals in the Sierra Foothills

For more than 30 years, Chuck Hovey has consistently crafted exceptional award-winning Sierra Foothills wines worthy of international recognition. He has long been revered as one of the region’s most talented, likeable, and fortuitous winemakers. But it was only in 2008, when Chuck and his wife, Jan, started Hovey Winery in Murphys, California and began crafting Hovey Wines, that he realized his lifelong dream.

Chuck came to Calaveras County in the early 1980s with several years of winemaking experience at J.Lohr Winery. He found a sweet spot right away in the vineyards of Stevenot Winery and winemaker for the legendary Barden Stevenot for 24 years. And what fruitful years they were. The winery received more than 500 medals at major wine competitions, and Chuck was able to introduce several grape varieties that were new to the Sierra Foothills including Tempranillo, Verdelho, Graciano, and Albariño. What’s more, Chuck’s masterful touch with Chardonnay grapes helped elevate the whole region’s reputation as a producer of excellent Chardonnay.

Although he’s not one to have favorites, Chuck is a founding member of Tempranillo Advocates Producers and Amigos Society (TAPAS). The 2009 Hovey Tempranillo was one of only two American Tempranillos awarded Gold at the 2011 Tempranillos al Mundo International Wine Competition.

Besides Hovey wines, Chuck crafts Italian estate wines at Gianelli Vineyards Winery and has returned as winemaker for Stevenot and the long-standing Oliveto family. When it came time to open the Hovey Winery tasting room, the Hoveys felt very fortunate that the historic house where Albert Michelson, the first American to win the Nobel Prize, had lived as a boy, was renovated and offered for lease. They hung the Hovey Winery shingle there in the spring of 2012. Guests are invited to linger inside at the wine bar or bistro table, or outside in a wicker loveseat or picnic table. Chuck Hovey’s wines are complex and elegant and they deserve a good, long linger.
