Certified organic, owner on site, gift shop, wine club events, pet friendly

Long before the word “organic” was in vogue, the legendary Bill Powers, founder of Badger Mountain Vineyard, started growing organic grapes in the Columbia Valley. That was more than 20 years ago.

Bill had first grown apples when pesticides were commonly used. Even then, he was concerned about overexposure to chemicals in farming. He planted Badger Mountain Vineyard in 1982 and slowly introduced organic practices. In 1990, it became the first Certified Organic wine grape vineyard in the state of Washington.

Today Badger Mountain Vineyard sets the standard with a 100 percent commitment to organic farming and production. Only organically approved and naturally occurring substances are used for vineyard applications, insect control, weed control, and fertilizers. Biodiesel fuel, converted from used cooking oil contributed by several local restaurants, is used to power its tractors and trucks. Three-kilowatt solar panels provide most of the energy needed for the tasting room. The winery is also certified Salmon Safe in recognition of its sustainable growing practices determined to protect biodiversity, water quality, and habitat for fish and wildlife.

To Bill, it’s all just common sense. “After many years of working with conventional chemicals, I simply found a better way,” he shrugs.

Bill’s vision and accomplishments are praised and honored by his peers. He was one of the original members of the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers and, in 2007, he received the WAWGG Lifetime Achievement Award for his industry work. And in 2010, he was inducted into the Walter Clore Center Legends of  Washington Wine Hall of Fame.

But Bill’s true reward for following his vision is found in Badger Mountain Vineyard wines. The winery produces two distinctive labels: Badger Mountain NSA (No Sulfites Added) and Badger Mountain VES (Vintner’s Estate Series). Crafted by Bill’s son Greg, each vintage presents a freshness of flavors and very pure fruit—proving yet again that going organic is the right thing to do.
