Story

Monte De Oro was born from a conviction in the potential of Temecula Valley as a world-class growing region. It is owned by a consortium of 67 families from South Africa, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States who share a passion for wine. Founded in 2002, the group is committed to making wines that are true to their varietal and regional characteristics and provide great value.

“Temecula Valley offers a fantastic climate to grow the kind of wine grape varieties Monte De Oro wants to pursue,” says Managing Partner and General Manager Ken Zignorski. The winery currently produces around 12,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot, Mourvedre, Malbec, Grenache, Cinsault, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Canelli, and Viognier.

Monte De Oro’s goal is to produce 100-percent estate-grown wines. Each wine is crafted by a winemaking team consisting of Ken, consulting winemaker Tim Kramer of Temecula Valley Winery Management, and wine advisor Tom Eddy. Monte De Oro’s family members then serve as a focus group, reviewing the wines and giving input as to style and personal taste preferences. The resulting wines are balanced, well structured, and integrated. They pair well with food, stand well alone, and also stand up well to competition. Past vintages have won more than their share of medals and accolades and the most recent releases (2007 Syrah, 2007 Cabernet Franc, and 2006 Synergy 65) promise to do at least as well.

Although just recently constructed, Monte De Oro’s winery estate is rich with Old World splendor and charm. Visitors marvel at the chandeliers, wood wine bars, and the glass floor that allows them to look down at the oak barrels that house future world-class vintages. Soon, Monte De Oro Winery will expand to include a natural gravity-flow winemaking crush pad, taking one more step toward giving Temecula Valley the international recognition it deserves.
