After spending over 15 years as a winemaker in the Napa Valley, the founder of Gregory Graham Wines looked to the north. Greg and his wife, Marianne, were drawn to the Red Hills appellation of Lake County, where they acquired Crimson Hill Vineyard in 2000. The volcanic soil— rich red in color, and at 2,000 feet elevation—proved ideal, not only for the established Zinfandel, but also for Syrah and Grenache. In 2004, they acquired an adjacent Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard, expanding their operation to 27 acres.

Today, Greg applies sustainable farming practices in the field and, since last summer, the winery is 100 percent solar powered. Greg’s reputation for bright, fruit-forward wines has built a strong following. His Sauvignon Blanc is rich with citrus and exotic notes, in contrast to the traditional style. The winery is also well-known for Rhône varietals, like Viognier, Grenache, and Syrah—as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay. Greg has been successful with blends. His Syrah-based Cinder Cone Reserve gains new fans in the winery’s cozy tasting room each weekend.

Greg has moved away from using corks on his white varietals and now uses the Stelvin screwcap closure to preserve the wine’s vibrant fruit. The fresh, fruit-forward wines have earned medals at the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, as well as at the local People’s Choice Competition.

The Grahams are strong advocates for Lake County as a wine destination. In the heart of the Cabernet vineyard stands a beautiful guesthouse that sleeps up to eight. It offers panoramic vineyard, mountain and lake views, and a hot tub. Greg is happy to take guests on an educational tour of the vineyard during their stay. They can also hike the Red Hills Terroir Trail between Crimson Hill Vineyard and the neighboring Vigilance Vineyards & Winery.

Those who have visited and tasted Gregory Graham wines find them to be a vibrant expression of the fine fruit and winemaking of Lake County.
