Thanks to a family’s dedication to hard work, ingenuity, and commitment to creating a great product for a fair price, Sutter Home Family Vineyards has become a household name and the second-largest family-run winery in the United States.
Although each member of the Trinchero family has played a part in helping the winery thrive since it was purchased in 1948, Bob Trinchero played a particularly colorful role when he accidentally invented White Zinfandel in the 1970s. The wine was an instant success and remains an American favorite. Not one to rest on its laurels, Sutter Home Family Vineyards is now experiencing a resurging interest in its Moscato wine. The extravagantly perfumed Moscato is a great value and balances well with fruit, cheese, and spicy dishes.
Sutter Home Family Vineyards has always been a leader in pairing great food with great wine. In fact, 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of Sutter Home’s Build a Better Burger recipe contest. After a careful summer-long screening and evaluation process, 10 recipe authors are chosen and flown to the Napa Valley for the cook-off in late September. This year’s winner—chosen by some of America’s top chefs—receives an impressive $100,000 cash prize.
In keeping with the theme of wine and burgers, Sutter Home has a new cookbook, Burger Parties. It features winning recipes from Sutter Home’s Build a Better Burger contest. The cookbook is coauthored by James McNair (who has written 40 other cookbook titles) and Jeffrey Starr, the culinary director and executive chef for Trinchero Family Estates/Sutter Home Family Vineyards.
Sutter Home extends beyond great burgers to philanthropic causes—particularly breast cancer awareness. The winery started its Sutter Home for Hope program more than eight years ago and, working closely with City of Hope, has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for research, treatment, and education. Through the cohesive efforts of one dedicated American family, Sutter Home Family Vineyards has made lasting contributions to the quality of the nation’s wine, food, and health.
