Story

The ability to merge two seemingly opposite passions into one reality is not often an easy feat, but for Russ Jones, owner and winemaker at Truckee River Winery, it has been a success for more than 20 years. The child of two ski instructors, Russ grew up with skis on his feet, never doubting that a life of snow was his destiny. Ripping himself away for the sake of education, he earned his oenology degree from UC Davis in 1983 and proceeded to train with winemaking masters in Paso Robles and Oregon. He was inspired by the Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley and he decided to focus on the great subtleties of that varietal on his own but couldn’t ignore the call to return to his snowy roots.

In 1989, Truckee River Winery was opened and remains the “highest and coldest” winery in California. The challenging climate does not stop Russ from growing a few vines himself, but for his small-lot wines he sources grapes from some of the top vineyard locations in the state, including Garys’ Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey and the legendary old vine Gribaudo Zinfandel from Lodi. This attention to quality fruit, coupled with Russ’s unique ability to take advantage of Truckee’s cold microclimate, which naturally aids fermentation and slows down the barrel-aging process, has resulted in award-winning wines.

The family winery, housed in a bright red barn, is a team effort; duties are shared by wife and CFO Joan and their young daughter Katy. Small production, high quality, and attention to detail are what drive their handcrafted winemaking philosophy. As Russ says: “Where else can you ski powder in the morning and make wine in the afternoon?”
